Colourful Labour

This photo documentary series explores one of Nigeria’s oldest civilizations through the Kofor Mata dye pits of Kano. For over 500 years, these pits have been the site of a grueling, ancestral craft. By documenting every stage—from the intricate hand-sewn patterns to the rhythmic, manual "beating" of the fabric—these images reveal the raw reality of the artisans. It is a study of the profound labor, generational pride, and the quiet health sacrifices made to create the world-renowned "indigo gold."

The Story Behind the Shoot

The dye pits of Kano are a living museum, yet for the men and women who work them, they are a site of relentless labor. I spoke with third-generation guides whose grandfathers managed these same pits, carrying on a family business that dates back half a millennium. My goal was to move past the vibrant finished products and document the people behind them: the pattern-makers locking in designs with needle and thread, the dyers submerged in fumes, and the "beaters" who use wooden mallets to hammer a metallic sheen into the fabric in lieu of modern ironing.

Visually, I wanted to capture the tension between the beauty of the indigo and the harshness of the environment. The creative direction focuses on the "texture" of the labor—the stained hands, the lack of protective gear, and the ever-present risk of toxins that these artisans face daily. By highlighting the raw materials and the physical toll of the work, the shoot serves as a sobering reminder that these globally coveted fabrics are born from a level of manual intensity and health-hazard that most consumers will never see.
